Our monumental building on Mathenesserlaan has a special history. Built in 1938 for the Institute Schoevers under the leadership of Mies Lanen, later the home of RTV Rijnmond and since 2023 boutique hotel Morgan & Mees Rotterdam. With the start of MIES in October 2025, we are writing a new chapter. A homage to Mies Lanen and her progressive spirit.
Mies Lanen was a pioneer in women’s emancipation. As the founder of the Schoevers Institute, she gave generations of women the opportunity to become independent and financially self-sufficient. In a man’s world, she forged her own path: liberated, determined, and forward-thinking. She personally commissioned the design of this building and lived in the penthouse, surrounded by the energy of the women she inspired. Her love for architecture, art, and social change can still be felt in MIES today. Her spirit lives on in MIES. A place that thrives, surprises, and connects, just as she once did.
The monumental building at Mathenesserlaan 145 in Rotterdam is an icon of Bauhaus architecture, with clean lines and functional design. It once housed the renowned Schoevers Institute: the training ground for ambitious women claiming their place in the business world. Later, it became the home of Radio Rijnmond, where stories and news were shared with the city. This building breathes history: a place of progress, education, and creativity. Today, it takes on a new meaning as a meeting place where past and future come together in an inspiring, contemporary setting at Restaurant MIES.
Morgan & Mees has been a household name in Amsterdam since 2014 and, in 2023, opened its doors in Rotterdam in the monumental building on Mathenesserlaan. The boutique hotel offers 22 rooms and suites, all designed by interior decorator Anne Claus.
The blend of history and contemporary design creates a stay that feels both stylish and full of character. From intimate rooms to spacious suites, each has its own atmosphere and comfort. Spending the night in this historic building makes the experience uniquely “Rotterdams”.
